Conducting Interdisciplinary Research

As the first medical school in nearly 50 years to be built from the ground up at a top tier Association of American Universities research university, Dell Medical School is uniquely positioned to innovate in health while tapping into the resources of an established university system.

The Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences partners with UT researchers who are at the top of their fields in molecular bioscience, addiction, computational health, memory and more. At Dell Med, collaboration between departments, institutes and centers is the norm, not the exception. The product of all this teamwork is a creative environment where experts innovate together on meaningful solutions to improve care.

Featured Projects

As part of a three-year study, researchers will map the brains of adolescents before and after epilepsy surgery to examine how novel brain-machine interfaces and embodied learning technologies — such as playing games on a virtual reality treadmill — can help the brain rewire itself before surgery, move key functions away from the surgeon’s target and recover more quickly afterward. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is leading an effort to transform the Austin State Hospital into the cornerstone for an improved system of collaborative, community-focused care that helps people across Central Texas. Mulva Clinic team members contribute to that work along with Dell Med’s Design Institute for Health and community partners. EXPLORE THE INITIATIVE »

Mulva Clinic leaders are developing technology in partnership with the Cockrell School of Engineering that will enable physicians to remotely monitor their patients’ cognitive function in real time by analyzing how they use their smartphones. When the technology shows that a patient is exhibiting signs of cognitive decline, caregivers are notified and can intervene before the patient deteriorates further, preventing stressful and costly hospitalizations.
